How to taste AUSTIN 101
Open It
In some ways, Austin 101 Light Whiskey is more like Cognac than Bourbon, so it should be poured into a glass that will capture the aromas. A minute or two before sipping, pour some into a whiskey glass or a small stemless wine glass, let it open and find out why it is called a symphony of grains.
Austin 101 is steam distilled to a higher purity than bourbons or other whiskeys; this allows the essence of the locally grown grains to be captured fully. Besides pure local water, the only ingredients are grains grown in Texas. Non-GMO Texas white corn, red winter wheat from the Texas panhandle, and Texas-grown barley malted in Fort Worth. Steam distillation produces a spirit that is a delicious representation of these flavorful local grains, right from the still.
And then, unlike Bourbon, which by law must be aged in a new charred Oak barrel, Austin 101 Light Whiskey is finished in select, once-used high quality whiskey barrels, which imparts a golden blonde color, and flavor notes of vanilla, butterscotch, and a hint of spice. Nothing else is added, and all the production is done in the Austin area.
Nose It
Be prepared that it is 101 proof. Although it may seem smoother than you would expect from a high proof spirit - be careful when you nose it and not to take too much in and deaden your senses. Hold the glass under your nose and open your mouth as you breathe in. You should notice its bouquet is full of sweetness, vanilla, butterscotch, and some toasty notes.
Sip It
Take a small sip to prepare your palette. You will notice a pleasant warm heat from the 101 proof. Now you're ready for a slightly larger sip. Feel how round and smooth it feels on your palette; warm and silky, the sweetness and delicious flavors are now revealed. And by the third sip, you notice how the flavors linger into a long smooth finish.
Enjoy It
Although Austin 101 is designed as a sipping whiskey to be enjoyed neat like a fine Cognac, it is very versatile and makes delicious, smooth cocktails. We included some of our favorites on our cocktails page to get you started!
